An Experimental Study of the Skype Peer-to-Peer VoIP System

چکیده
Despite its popularity, relatively little is known about the traffic characteristics of the Skype VoIP system and how they differ from other P2P systems. We describe an experimental study of Skype VoIP traffic conducted over a five month period, where over 82 million datapoints were collected regarding the population of online clients, the number of supernodes, and their traffic characteristics. This data was collected from September 1, 2005 to January 14, 2006. Experiments on this data were done in a black-box manner, i.e., without knowing the internals or specifics of the Skype system or messages, as Skype encrypts all user traffic and signaling traffic payloads. The results indicate that although the structure of the Skype system appears to be similar to other P2P systems, particularly KaZaA, there are several significant differences in traffic. The number of active clients shows diurnal and work-week behavior, correlating with normal working hours regardless of geography. The population of supernodes in the system tends to be relatively stable; thus node churn, a significant concern in other systems, seems less problematic in Skype. The typical bandwidth load on a supernode is relatively low, even if the supernode is relaying VoIP

An Analysis of the Skype Peer-to-Peer VoIP System
Nowadays, peer-to-peer (P2P) applications are in vogue everywhere. Business models have been defined and setup in order to take profit from their decentralized and lowcost architectures. One of the most promising revenue potential markets is the sector of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP or Internet telephony) systems which have even brought telephone companies fright and concern. Skype is on...
متن کاملA Measurement-based Study of the Skype Peer-to-Peer VoIP Performance
It has been increasingly popular to build voice-over-IP (VoIP) applications based on peer-to-peer (P2P) networks in the Internet. However, many such VoIP applications free-ride the network bandwidth of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Thus their success may come at a cost to ISPs, especially those on the edge of the Internet. In this paper, we study the VoIP quality of Skype, a popular P2P-ba...

• About 75% of the time was spent on protocol control, leaving 10% dedicated to relay traffic, and the rest of the time spent idling. • About 50% of the Skype clients were NATed. Thus, these clients never could be promoted to supernodes. • Of all supernodes, close to 50% came from within a university setting. • Skype clients follow diurnal, work-week patterns. This is quite different from super...
متن کاملApplication-Level Multicast for a Skype Clone
This paper speculates on the integration of application-level multicast with a Skype clone, an application that implements Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Skype is a globally successful application of IP telephony using a peer-to-peer network. Researchers have shown how efficiently application-level multicast can be adopted by a peer-to-peer network, I now wish to speculate on how well a S...
متن کاملA Performance Study of VoIP Applications: MSN vs. Skype
Due to the growing demand for VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services, researches on VoIP design have attained more and more attention. Compared with a traditional voice service PSTN (Public Switched Telephony Network), VoIP is able to provide lower cost and more flexibility. However, there are still many challenging issues to guarantee a consistent and good quality of voice connection ove...
